Energy theft

Energy theft, also known as meter tampering, is where there has been a deliberate alteration to a meter, so that it doesn’t recorded the usage correctly.

Energy theft is stealing. It’s a crime and is something you should report straight away.

Effects of energy theft

Energy theft affects all parties involved. It is a massive problem for energy suppliers, costing the industry millions of pounds a year.

The UK Revenue Protection Association (UKRPA) found that in a lot of cases, the cost to suppliers is passed onto the consumer in form of higher energy charges – which is why it’s so important to avoid and report energy theft as soon as you’re aware of it.

Additionally, energy theft is a crime which can lead to a fine and a 5 year prison sentence.

The dangers of energy theft

Energy theft can also be extremely dangerous. Tampering with an electric meter could cause an electric shock, or a gas leak on a gas meter. Keep everyone in your household safe by reporting any concerns you may have about your own meter.

If you believe your meter is not working correctly, never try to fix it yourself. Simply let us know and we’ll send an engineer to deal with the problem safely.
